SAVING THE STATE THEATRE

Dating back to 1926, The State Theatre Center for the Arts is known far and wide as a historic landmark and a center for community and global performances. In the 1980s, however, the building was threatened with demolition – until a group of concerned Eastonians calling themselves “Friends of the State Theatre” stepped in to save it. Relying on the support of the community they called home, Friends of the State Theatre raised enough money to not only purchase the building, but to renovate it completely. The preservation and restoration of the historic State Theatre became a larger metaphor for the preservation of downtown Easton itself. In essence, “it’s not about how to save a theatre – it’s about why.”

Through rare archival, untapped insights, and stop-motion paper animation, we also come to understand why classics such as “Goodnight Moon,” “Where the Wild Things Are,” “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” and “The Snowy Day” changed the art form and stand the test of time.

Through personal experience, filmmaker Mel Halbach takes us on a journey on a nuclear missile submarine during the cold war days of Mutually Assured Destruction. Through interviews, stock footage and animation Halbach brings forth tales from the underworld where 140 shipmates lived underwater, seventy days at a time. Their mission: to participate in the destruction of the world, if ordered to do so. Mel’s personal journey is woven with the contemporary stories of his shipmates – some reluctant to push the button. During patrol Mel describes how he and others smoked marijuana to keep their sanity under the cloud of launching an all out nuclear attack.
